Letter from the Editor: Things to be thankful for this Holiday Season!!!
Posted by admin in General News on December 8th, 2009
I was thinking about gratitude the other day ( I often ponder random philosophical thoughts at Green Green Car Co!) and I realized that I have not been very good at it. In fact, environmentalists, greenies, whatever you want to call us, tend to focus on the negative. It is the nature of our cause. With global warming, pollution, and dependency on foreign oil on your mind, it can be a downright downer at times! So for my New Years Resolution , I have decided to start focusing on the positive. I hope you will too. A wise person told me to make regular lists of what I am grateful for so here is my rather random much abbreviated list: Read the rest of this entry »

10 Easy Steps to a Green Home and a Greener Environment
By Gabriella Carrera
Everybody is talking about going green but are you actually doing it? Did you know that you don’t have to rebuild your house in order to have a green home? If you can afford it, rebuilding is certainly one way to go green, but there are smaller steps you can take to have a healthier, green home that will help to save the environment.
Trash
There was a time when we just threw out the trash. You can go green by setting up a simple recycling center in your home. All it takes are some dedicated trash cans and some space in the garage or just outside the back door, or if you have space, in the cabinets under the kitchen counter. Things that can be recycled are cans, plastic bottles, glass jars, cardboard food boxes, and newspapers. You can compost food waste and make a wonderful fertilizer for the garden, and find ways to reuse some of the things that you used to throw away. Read the rest of this entry »

Are Electric Bikes the Answer to High Gas Prices?
By Delbert Laird
Picture the following scenario: You just arrived home from a hectic work day. At this point, all you really want to do is eat dinner and relax. Only one problem: you don’t have a particular item that you need to make the dinner. Suddenly, you’re dreading a drive to and from the store, and the time, traffic, and gas expenses that go with it.
Now consider this alternative: instead of hopping into the car and driving congested city streets to the market for just one or two items, you zip there quickly along sidewalks and other paths on which cars are prohibited, propelled by the quiet electric motor of your electric bicycle. With the money you’re saving on gas, you decide to pick up a bottle of wine to go with that dinner. It’s OK - the small trailer you’ve hitched to your electric bike lets you carry home your groceries easily and safely. Read the rest of this entry »

So you want to make your own biodiesel…
I knew I was hooked when I took my first sip of a liquid I realized could power a car, was clean enough to drink, and that I could make myself for less than a dollar a gallon. This was also back in ’03, when the Iraq war was starting, and I found myself getting excited about the idea of making my own fuel as one thing I could do to remove myself from supporting the petroleum economy. Making your own fuel is revolutionary in the same way as getting your food from local farms; in both cases you’re relying on local sources instead of mega-corporations. It’s even more fun when you get together with others and form a fuel-making coop with everyone gathering oil from local restaurants, as I did three years ago with the Dirty Hands Biodiesel Coop. Whatever your motivation, whether you are doing it by yourself or with others, making your own biodiesel fuel can be a rewarding activity. But there are some things to think about. Going Green is Not As Hard As You Might Think
By Anita Burnett
Going Green is not something that happens overnight. It’s a laid out plan on how each and every one of us must think green whenever we can.
Gone are the days when you left it up to the other guy. You and I are the other guy. Start Simple. That’s the Plan. Included are some small steps that you can take that don’t cost anything (other than effort).
The key to going green is to take it slow. Most people have given some amount of thought to living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, but frequently become overwhelmed as where to start so they delay taking that first step.
Success is obtained by forming a plan that can be executed over time. Try to make one or two changes ever 30 - 60 days so you allow it to become habit before taking on the next steps. For anything to become a “habit” you must repeat the step for up to six weeks. Then it becomes natural, and you do it without thought.
It’s like learning to turn out the lights when you leave a room or turn off the TV that no one is watching. Read the rest of this entry »
