Making sense of electric vehicle tax credits and incentives

If you were thinking about purchase a low speed three or four wheeled vehicle, now is the time. There are both tax exemptions and tax credits in place, which will be ending on December 31, 2009. If you purchase a 3 wheeled vehicle like a Xebra truck or sedan, you will receive a 10% federal tax credit up to $2500 maximum. Picture the following scenario: You just arrived home from a hectic work day. At this point, all you really want to do is eat dinner and relax. Only one problem: you don’t have a particular item that you need to make the dinner. Suddenly, you’re dreading a drive to and from the store, and the time, traffic, and gas expenses that go with it.

Now consider this alternative: instead of hopping into the car and driving congested city streets to the market for just one or two items, you zip there quickly along sidewalks and other paths on which cars are prohibited, propelled by the quiet electric motor of your electric bicycle. With the money you’re saving on gas, you decide to pick up a bottle of wine to go with that dinner. So you want to make your own biodiesel…


I knew I was hooked when I took my first sip of a liquid I realized could power a car, was clean enough to drink, and that I could make myself for less than a dollar a gallon. This was also back in ’03, when the Iraq war was starting, and I found myself getting excited about the idea of making my own fuel as one thing I could do to remove myself from supporting the petroleum economy. Making your own fuel is revolutionary in the same way as getting your food from local farms; in both cases you’re relying on local sources instead of mega-corporations. It’s even more fun when you get together with others and form a fuel-making coop with everyone gathering oil from local restaurants, as I did three years ago with the Dirty Hands Biodiesel Coop. Whatever your motivation, whether you are doing it by yourself or with others, making your own biodiesel fuel can be a rewarding activity. But there are some things to think about.
